20th February – a day in history

February 20, 2010

It’s a co-incidence I start this post-a-day blog on Kurt Cobain’s birthday, a day shared with the Stone Rose’s Ian Brown, Buffy Sainte-Marie, J. Geils, and Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boy’s. But with such a weight of history, February 20 seems the perfect day to start.

The idea is simple: chose a song representing something which happened on that day in history. Sometimes I’ll be literal: a birthday, a death, an album release. Sometimes it may be a non-musical event which inspired songs. But I’ll also choose events which only have a thematic or even tenuous link to an historical event.

For example, the February 20 is the day Cher seperated from Sonny Bono, Pat Benetar got married, and the Azaria Chamberlain inquest found she was taken by a dingo.

But it is also the day the first American President George Washington signed the Postal Service Act. And, well, I just can’t resist…
