Food – Pie (12)

December 28, 2009

I’ve been a fan of saxophonist Iain Ballamy’s since his days in Bill Bruford’s Earthworks. It was through his work I discovered Food, an Anglo-Norwegian Improv group, which takes Ballamy out of his comfort zone, and into a delicious front line with trumpeter Arve Henriksen.

Henriksen has been one of my discoveries of the decade. His trumpet is an extension of his voice, his voice a phantom trumpet. Both are featured on a solo album inspired by Japanese gardens. He also a member of the far rowdier Supersilent.

Ballamy does a fine intro on Pie, but ultimately it is Henriksen’s track; his trumpet intimate and delicate.
