Bliss n Eso – Bullet and a Target (61)

December 15, 2009

The real success story of the decade of Australian music has been the rise and rise of hip hop. The Hilltop Hoods have merely been the highest profile and least interesting of rappers going around, but they helped break down the barriers.

That both Drapht and Pez can make the Hottest 100 top ten last year is a testiment to how things have changed. A quick scan of the 200 songs which made the 2000 and 2001 countdown shows no Australian hip hop at all. It was until 1200 Techniques charted in 2002 things started changing.

A track like Bliss n Eso’s Bullet and a Target would be unthinkable from Australia hip hop a decade ago. And if it did exist, it wouldn’t have been heard outside local hip hop scenes. Increased confidence, vastly improved production techniques and stage time at major festivals has meant rap can truly compete with the Aussie rockers for our listening ears.
