Jill Scott – Gettin’ in the Way (MJ Cole remix) (72)

December 12, 2009

My dodgy memory misinformed me this version was the single. It was definitely the version we played on radio. M. J. Cole adds an urgenct shuffle to procedings compared to the languid r’n’b original.  I’m a sucker for those those little keyboard arpeggios Cole brings from house and drum ‘n’ bass.

I’ve written before about my lament at the decline of underground and expermental eletronic music in the late Nineties. The commercialisation of the music was as much a cause as the well of ideas running dry. While the the market became flooded with safe tunes designed especially for Ibiza compilations, the upshot was existing producers like Cole got to mess around with pop. For her part, Jill Scott is a vocalist who outstrips the diva moaners who previously fronted house and drum ‘n’ bass. For a fleeting moment, the marriage of r’n’b and house was a happy one indeed.
