The Fall – Susan vs Youthclub (79)

December 11, 2009

Susan vs Youthclub is the song which clinched the Fall for me. Previously I’d heard a scattering of albums with no apparent relationship to each other. This song proved to me John Peel’s famous maxim:  “(The Fall) are always different; they are always the same.”

I love the pulse of the music, the hazy vocals, the noises, the Badly Drawn Boy anecodote; everything.

The song comes from the “Fall vs  2003” EP, which in turn was a pre-cursor to their “The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click)”, one of the strongest album of the band’s career. So, while  Mark E Smith and his revolving door of bandmates had another chaotc decade, at least they beat 2003.
