Ugly Duckling – A Little Samba (83)

December 10, 2009

I’m not the go-to man to sum up hip-hop in the Noughties. My knowledge is wide-spread but wafer thin. I tend to stumble across incredible tracks or albums in isolation. They may be mainstream, independent or experimental, but I don’t go looking for them.

A Little Samba came to me from listening to The Late Show with Crag Pilling on the UK’s Student Broadcast Network. Except thanks to Internet streaming from University Radio Nottingham, it became a mid-morning show in Australia. I was taken how much better their music selection was than Australian radio at the time, especially Triple J.

Where the J’s played the Ugly Duckling’s clunkier Pick Up Line, SBN grooved with this affable satire of rap one-upmanship. This song is light and fluffy stuff, but also a little prophetic considering some of the antics of Kayne West later in the decade.
