Destroyer – Rubies (82)

When I reviewed the namesake album back in 2006, I wrote, “Dan Bejar and his talented band are collagists, who have spent a lifetime listening and have turned many parts into a big picture only Destroyer can create. Sprawling, exciting, impressive.”

Here the guitars are so prog rock it hurts; the lyrics deliciously, vividly meaningless. At one point it sounds like a tipsy open mic night, the next a rock epic.

Close up Rubies may sound like tangled wool, but step back and everything is woven into a coherent tapestry.
